The German Road to the Athens of America: Higher Learning and Radical Republicans in Boston, 1815-1848. It follows the experiences of a group of young men from Boston sent to Germany for their education in the years after the end of the Napoleonic Wars. It shows how their studies in Germany encouraged them to look to ancient Greece for models of civic reform and improvement of their home city, and how the influence of their European experiences ultimately undermined the goals they pursued. The paper speaks to the larger question of the fate of city-states and small republics in the aftermath of the Age of Revolutions and the rise of industrial capitalism.
