Reconstruction

Particularly interesting material includes the Ulysses S Grant Papers - over 31 volumes of correspondence chronicling the political history of a turbulent era - and the Ku Klux Klan Reports, containing hundreds of interviews with victims of the Klan. The WPA interviews with former slaves often touch on the postwar era, as do numerous databases in Historic Newspapers and Historic Journals. DeBow's Review for example provides insights into how wealthy southerners tried to adjust to the end of slavery.

One excellent archive exploring two counties - one northern, one southern - in the era is The Valley of the Shadow - Two Communities in the American Civil War.
